Wildfish Discovered Again in the Fengxiang Segment of the Thousand Rivers

On December 20th, Mr. Laiwa, a retired employee of the Fēngjiǎshān Reservoir Administration, discovered afish while inspecting the reservoir's protective forest near Péngzǔyuán Village in Liǔlín Town. He brought it home to raise. This was the second time Mr. Laiwa had discovered and protected thefish since 2016.
Thefish, also known as theChinese giant salamander (scientific name:Andriasdavidianus), is aamphibian,hidden-lung salamander species. It lives in freshwater. Thefish is not a fish, but the largest amphibian in terms of body size, with an average length of about 1 meter and the longest reaching 2 meters, with a weight of 20-25 kilograms and the largest reaching 50 kilograms. Its color varies depending on its habitat, with the back being brown, reddish-brown, or dark brown, and the top with irregular darker spots. In 1988, the'People's Republic of China Wildlife Protection Law' listed thefish as a second-class key protected wild animal.
On January 21st noon, Mr. Laiwa reported the news to the Fèngxiāng County Agricultural Bureau. The bureau praised and thanked Mr. Laiwa for protecting the wild animal and arranged for the county's aquatic station to protect it in accordance with the regulations for the protection of aquatic wild animals.
Aquatic station fishery personnel came to Mr. Laiwa's home to measure it on site: length 60cm, width 12cm, weight 5.2kg, confirming that it was a second-class protected animal, theChinese giant salamander.
Subsequently, after contacting the city aquatic station, it was sent to the city aquatic station for temporary rearing and observation of its health condition, and will be released back into its suitable growth protection area after it recovers to normal.
