Number of Migratory Birds Passing Through Hunan South Mountain National Park Pilot Zone Reaches Historic High

In the Hunan South Mountain National Park Pilot Zone located in the southwestern border region of Hunan, continuous efforts are being made to increase monitoring, strengthen patrol and control, and protect wetland resources, providing safe habitats and migration environments for passing migratory birds. From February this year, the golden mountain national nature reserve and white cloud lake national wetland protection zone bird observation stations in the park have monitored the number and species of passing migratory birds reaching 104 species and 907,000 individuals. This is an increase of more than 90,000 compared to the same period last year, a historic high.
The Hunan South Mountain National Park Pilot Zone is located in the southwestern border region of Hunan, in the Yuechengling Mountains and the Xuefeng Mountains, administered by the city of Changbemiao Zizhuyuan. It has forest area of 3.29 million acres, and the park has two thousand-year migratory bird channels. Every autumn and winter, migratory birds migrate south and return north in the spring after the flowers bloom, which are the main migration seasons for migratory birds. Every day, large numbers of migratory birds rest in the county's forest areas, supplementing their energy and food before migrating out in groups.
In recent years, to ensure the smooth completion of migratory bird migration, the Hunan South Mountain National Park Administration, together with the Changbemiao Zizhuyuan People's Government, has strengthened supervision and severely cracked down on illegal fishing, hunting, poisoning, and disturbance of migratory birds, providing escorted support for the southward migration and northward return of migratory birds. At the same time, bird protection tours and educational activities are carried out in the park to gain the understanding, support, and participation of the whole society, attracting volunteers and bird lovers to participate in wild patrol and bird protection actions. More than 10,000 kilograms of carp, carp, and ( - carp) fish seedlings have been deployed, and the wetland ecosystem has been restored and improved, significantly increasing the diversity of the food chain for migratory birds, providing a warm welcome for their southward and northward journeys. As of now, the number of migratory birds residing in the park has increased by more than 8,000 compared to the initial scientific research of the South Mountain National Park Construction, and the number of bird species has increased from the initial scientific research of 97 to the current 123. Among them, there are national rare and endangered animals such as swans, gray cranes, snow geese, Chinese fall ducks, green-headed ducks, and green-headed ducks; there are also 6 species of national second-level protected birds, such as large and small swans, red hawks, gray cranes, white egrets, and mandarin ducks; and there are more than 20 other second-level protected bird species.
