Nurhulu Grand Canyon: A Hidden Gem 2 Hours from Urumqi
Nuorculuo Grand Canyon is located 30 kilometers southwest of Changji City, Xinjiang, 60 kilometers from the capital Urumqi; about a 2-hour drive. The canyon winds 10 kilometers north from south. Nuorculuo Grand Canyon belongs to typical Danxia landforms.
Nuorculuo Grand Canyon is a typical Danxia landform. In the geological changes of millions of years, the red rock layers deposited were cut and eroded by water, forming majestic red rock formations.
Nuorculuo Grand Canyon is little known to tourists. Tourists can choose to drive, cycle or hike. Starting from Urumqi City, take Airport Expressway to Changji, the destination is about 40 kilometers from Changji City. From Changji City on the 312 National Highway go west, turn south to Ashili Township, or exit Uquqi Expressway at Awitainlu, or go south from Changji City's Sanggongtan Town, after passing the colorful gate of Ashili Village, you can reach Nuorculuo Grand Canyon.
First, you will see Nuorculuo Reservoir. There is a white wall with a red glazed tile roof on the hillside at the bend of the reservoir, with the words ‘Nuorculuo Reservoir, Sutian River’ written on it.
Then you can see the Nuorculuo Grand Canyon’s naturally formed S-bend, this is Nuorculuo’s ‘Nine Bends and Eighteen Curves’.
The majestic and vibrant Nuorculuo Grand Canyon has also become the first-choice outdoor shooting location for the TV series ‘The Empire of Qin’. The layered peaks and canyons form a series of magnificent mountain and water paintings, which make people intoxicated.
