City Ecological Exhibition Hall – Changchun North Lake National Wetland Park

Project Location: High-New District, Changchun City
Design Period: 2009-2011
Completion Time: 2012
Design Area: 10.8 square kilometers
Project Origin
01. The site is located at the downstream of the Yalong River in Changchun City, with lotus ponds and a good river and wetland landscape resources; 02. The village was developed chaotically, lacked infrastructure, river dredging, landfill and ash heap caused serious environmental pollution, showing a typical ecological degradation and disorderly construction in the suburban area;
03. The site faces threats from various large municipal infrastructure construction such as urban expansion, water conservancy dams, and cross-river bridges. Natural segments are experiencing pressure, erosion, and fragmentation.
Original landscape Design Orientation
The block has good wetland natural environment, but the landscape is monotonous and common, it does not have outstanding wetland characteristics or ecological value, its value is more in

closely linked with the city, is a precious natural space
Therefore, further highlighting its features and richness, creating a space for citizens to return to nature, realizing the harmonious coexistence of nature and cities, is the primary goal of park planning.
Secondly, the western and southern areas of the site, sewage, garbage, industrial waste and dust pollution are serious,Through positive artificial intervention and ecological restoration, the site has been revitalized, which is another focus of design thinking.Overall LayoutBased on the grasp of the site's features, the design is based on native conservation and restoration, enrich the park mountain and water space and plant species, treat the pollution, restore the ecological environment, achieve the full play of wetland ecological functions, and integrate leisure and science popularization functions, making the park can be appreciated, usable, establish 'city lake integration' beautiful coexistence relationship, achieve the best combination of wetland ecological value and recreational value.
Design PracticeOne
Must protect the park mountain and water space
Design firstly protect existing pond, wetland aquatic plants and big tree, native conservation as the base of the design. The design does comprehensive overlay of water body, plant, terrain features, study the suitability range of terrain treatment, according to the laws of nature, follow the momentum of nature, build lake and also build pile, create rich mountain and water space landscape pattern.
Long Island
The design utilizes the banks of the river and lake, 'shortcut to bend', imitating the natural mountain shape design 'long island', which not only meets the water conservancy function, but also becomes 'ridge' in the mountain and water landscape, creating green mountain background for the entire wetland park, constructing 'water follows the mountain, mountain follows water' mountain and water space relationship.
Willow Bank
The design preserves the willows on both sides of the original village road, combined with terrain modification, so that they become 'willow bank' shaded by trees on the lake surface. The 'long island' willow bank formed between mountain and water greatly enriched the terrain form of the base, the original monotonous and empty field became level and structured.

Lotus Pond
Enriching the mountain and water landscape construction created diverse ecological environment, thus preserved and greatly enriched the biodiversity of the base, effectively increased the green volume.
Two
Actively artificial intervention and ecological restoration

Rebuild the beautiful space of blue sky and clear water
To address the serious situation of sewage, garbage, dust pollution in the southern area of the site, the design plans for positive artificial intervention, mainly through wetland sewage treatment and landfill greening, to restore the environment that has been damaged.

Three
Communicate wetland water body with city river network and middle water system
Play the ecological and retention functions of the wetland
The park's lake area is nearly 4.2 square kilometers, supplement water is an important maintenance content. The park utilizes river replenishment and also utilizes the whole development zone's rain water to collect to three water channels, respectively, from the park's north, center, and south, to inject into the lake district. In addition, the park's south-western wetland sewage treatment plant's treated middle water is injected into the wetland to purify, and then flows into the lake district, integrated utilization of urban water resources.

Four
Pay attention to the creation of native plant communities
Green planting design with high volume and low maintenance
Based on the gradient from water to mountain, the design creates natural communities with abundant native plant materials, effectively increasing the regional green volume.
Five
Ecologically designed large municipal engineering facilities
Good connection with the natural space of the park

According to the needs of the city, the park will build a cross-river bridge and Yalong River flood control project inside the park area. For the negative impact of municipal engineering on the block's biological channel rupture, ground hardening and landscape damage, the designers worked with bridge, water conservancy and management departments, achieved ecologically designed large municipal facilities.
Cross-River Bridge
Six
Integrate leisure and science popularization functions into the natural environment
Create a beautiful space for citizens to return to nature
Willow Pavilion
The park rationally arranges activity space and service facilities, creates space for citizens to enjoy, relax, exercise, exhibition, and festival activities, and carries out plant cognition, wetland purification demonstration and science popularization activities. Currently, the Ice and Snow Festival, Sculpture Exhibition, Oil Paper Umbrella, Wind Chime Culture Tourism Festival, Grassroots Music Festival have held a variety of cultural and tourist activities in the wetland park, which is a vibrant space for citizens to approach nature and experience culture.
Changchun North Lake National Wetland Park is
The first in Northeast China to be based on ecological restoration of urban wetlands

and was completed and opened in 2012, after years of continuous construction and maintenance, it has formed a stable and healthy wetland ecosystem and beautiful park landscape, clear water and blue sky, flying birds,
the former abandoned and polluted land has become a beautiful urban oasis.

Changchun North Lake National Wetland Park was approved as a 4A-level tourist scenic spot in 2014 and officially became a national wetland park in December 2018. The beautiful ecological environment has greatly boosted the economic development of Changchun High-New District, and the district has become Changchun's new investment and construction hot spot, truly realized the harmonious coexistence of urban development and natural environment.2012
