Due to the Impact of COVID-19, Thailand Plans to Postpone Songkran Festival to July
Thai Headline News reports that on March 11th, Thai Tourism Bureau Director Yutasa publicly stated that the TAT plans to postpone the Songkran festival activities to July 4-7 due to the overlap with the Rainsommon Festival and the Summer Holiday, and this proposal has the approval of Sports and Tourism Minister Pipat. However, it still needs to consult with private companies.
Private companies said that because Songkran attracts a large number of foreign tourists every year, they will not cancel Songkran, but they can cancel the water splashing activities.
Yutasa responded that because this year is relatively dry and July is a green season, it is more suitable to hold Songkran. He didn't want too many large events to be canceled and didn't want to miss the opportunity to celebrate. However, it still needs to discuss the postponement of activities with the provincial activity organizers and private companies, like China's Qingming Festival, which some regions also postpone ancestor worship.
Yutasa said that Songkran is Thailand's New Year, so most provinces don't want to cancel Songkran. However, to reduce the risk of viral transmission, canceling Songkran activities is necessary. The final result still needs to be discussed.
