What are some good self-driving routes in China?

Please recommend a self-driving route along the eastern coast of Hainan Island. The high-speed highways in Hainan Island are divided into three sections: eastern coastal, western coastal, and central, which run north-south. Please note that there are no toll stations on these highways, so you don't need to pay tolls when driving.

First, let's consider the car rental issue. My suggestion here is to fly directly to Haikou and rent a car in Haikou. The reason is that car rental fees in Haikou are slightly lower than in Sanya, and there are fewer tourists in Haikou. Also, flights to Haikou are relatively cheaper than flights to Sanya.

Tip: Because it's a self-driving trip, you need to allocate half the time for driving and half the time for sightseeing. This will significantly reduce your sightseeing time.

Day 1: Haikou

Haikou also has beaches, but for cost-effectiveness, we won't focus on beaches in Haikou. Instead, let's directly explore the historical sites. I recommend Five Temples (Wugu Fu), which was the site where five ministers were exiled during the Tang and Song dynasties. These ministers were Li Deyu, Li Gang, Zhao Ding, Li Guang and Hu Chen. Li De Yu and Li Gang were officials during the Tang Dynasty, and Li Guang and Zhao Ding were officials during the Song Dynasty. The most famous of the five is Su Dongpo, who was also exiled here in 1097. Su Dongpo left traces here at Five Temples.

Today, Five Temples is no longer just a memorial site for the Tang and Song ministers who were exiled. Its complexity has increased. Today, Five Temples is actually a complex of buildings, although it is commonly known as Five Temples because of its representative buildings, which is why it is also called Hainan's First Building.

Qingtai School

Qingtai School is a very retro-style attraction with well-preserved buildings and exquisite carvings. The scale is relatively small but very distinctive and niche. Few people visit it, making it a former campus of Qingtai Teachers College. This building was built during the 40th year of the Hongxi reign and was dedicated to Qiu Jun, who was known as Qingtai. Qiu Jun was a scholar in the Ming Dynasty.

Qingtai School was the highest school in Hainan in ancient times. If Hainan scholars wanted to serve in government, they basically needed to complete their education here. Therefore, it was quite influential. Whether you are interested in history or visiting ancient buildings, it's worth a visit.

Day 2: Wenchang

The most famous attraction in Wenchang is Wenchang Copper Drum Ridge Scenic Area, which includes many attractions, such as Xiqiw Cove, Moon Bay, Stone Park, Karqin River, Yunlong Bay, and Da'ao Bay. Copper Drum Ridge is definitely worth climbing. The altitude here is not high, about 338 meters, and there are also some relatively low peaks. Copper Drum Ridge is the most famous mountain in Hainan.

The sea surface in Copper Drum Ridge, Moon Bay, Xiqiw Cove, Yunlong Bay, etc., is calm and without pollution, which are ideal natural bathing beaches. If you enjoy playing in the sea, you can come here. Remember to bring swimwear and snorkeling gear, because snorkeling is a must-have.

Tip: Remember the small road you passed by when climbing Copper Drum Ridge? After descending, you can drive along this road and then drive forward. There is a small fishing village here. Although it is not a tourist attraction, the scenery is beautiful.

Day 3: Mangrove

Regarding Mangrove, I recommend four places: Mangrove Bay Monkey Island, Fengjia Bay, Rilu Bay, and Lingao County. Fengjia Bay is truly a very few tourist place. This is the birthplace of the Monkey King in the 1982 version of Journey to the West. You can still find traces here. The sand here is slightly black, and the black substance is titanium ore. This is quite distinctive.

Mangrove has many bays, such as Stone Plum Bay, Rilu Bay, Fragrant Bay, God Realm Peninsula, and Ningling Ridge. You can see many foreign sisters in Rilu Bay, so I recommend it here. There are sea urchins and abalone in the cracks in the reef by the sea in Rilu Bay, and a lot of hermit crabs. When walking on the beach, you will see a lot of shrimp-tiger fish, these small fish belong to carnivorous small fish, if you stand in the water without moving, they will gather in groups to give you free foot massage.

Lingao County has many fish-shell restaurants. In fact, these fishermen made nets to block the sea, and then raised seafood in the net cages. Now it has become a sea restaurant. Tourists can take a boat to the fish-shell restaurant and eat seafood. This is seafood that was just caught from the sea.

Go to Mangrove Bay Monkey Island, you can buy a cable car to the island, in fact, this island's gameplay is similar to other islands, the only characteristic is that Mangrove Bay Monkey Island has more than 2500 monkeys, which are raised freely.

Day 4: Kaijing Island

The comments about Kaijing Island are quite good. I recommend this place because the water quality is really clear, it's a tie with the Maldives. Although there are not as many fish in Hainan as in the Maldives, you can still get half. So bring your snorkeling equipment and go snorkeling here, and have a close contact with the sea.

Day 5: Sanya

The gameplay in Sanya is more diverse, with various tourism resources. Foreign tourists who visit Hainan Island basically go to Sanya. Because we're focusing on small-town attractions, we're not going to the popular island destinations. Here I recommend Coconut Grove Lime and Miao Culture Tourism Zone, which is based on the culture of Lime and Miao. In the scenic area, you can watch Lime and Miao cultural performances, such as Coconut Grove Rhythm, but you need to buy tickets separately. It's recommended to buy a ticket package at the entrance, because it's more expensive to buy separately.

Here you can not only see traditional Lime female warriors, but also see Lime boat-shaped houses, and watch performances of climbing Lime trees. It takes 5 seconds to climb up and down. It's really a god-like speed.

Coconut Grove parking is free, but most people go with group tours, so the parking lot is not very full.
