On April 10th, the official Weibo of the China Giant Panda Research Center released a message stating that 'Lu Lu Ai', a giant panda at the Panda Center's Shizeping Base, died on September 9, 2019, due to strangulation caused by entanglement of a hanging ball rope. The incident occurred seven hours after being discovered by keepers.
According to Nanfang reporters, at the time of the incident, the panda base was live-streaming, and many netizens paid attention to the abnormalities of 'Lu Lu Ai' in the live streaming page. Currently, the toys with long ropes in the base have disappeared from the live streaming. To provide the giant pandas with vitality and improve their breeding ability, the base specially prepared various toys.
Regarding this incident, the China Giant Panda Research Center stated that it will learn from the lesson, investigate safety hazards, and strengthen night patrols. Nanfang reporters noted that in March of this year, the center had issued a statement requiring all panda bases to conduct comprehensive inspections and build integrated defense and linkage monitoring and control systems for management.
Giant panda strangled to death by toy rope, discovered dead seven hours later
The China Giant Panda Research Center's official announcement states that on April 9, 2020, 'Lu Lu Ai', a giant panda at the Panda Center's Shizeping Base, died due to strangulation caused by entanglement of a hanging ball rope.
The announcement stated that on September 9th at 2:00 AM, 'Lu Lu Ai' was playing with a toy in the outdoor playground of the panda kindergarten when it climbed to a wooden rack with hanging toys, then tied the rope of the hanging ball around its neck, began to struggle, and stopped struggling after a few minutes. Due to the late night incident and the difficulty in distinguishing the entangled posture from the resting posture of the panda cub, the night patrol personnel failed to find the abnormality.
The keeper discovered 'Lu Lu Ai''s neck and forelimbs were wrapped with the rope of the hanging ball at around 9:00 AM, contacted the veterinarian, and determined that the cub had died after a period of time. Samples were collected for examination.

The panda was only 8 months old when it died, and it was separated from its mother after weaning and moved to the panda kindergarten.
