Crocodiles: An Existence 'Immune' to Aging

Aging is a phenomenon in life: we see our parents, pets and ourselves, as well as inanimate objects like cars, clothes and outdated iPhones also age. Immortality is something we cannot accept, but what about crocodiles? Will they refute or challenge our beliefs about eternal life? Yes, thanks to their 'negligible aging'. Aging is a biological aging: loss of reproductive ability or loss of functions necessary for life due to aging. Aging, defined a species' lifespan. Crocodiles may exhibit aging that can be ignored: they will not worsen because of aging. This means they are more likely to die from accidents, diseases, rather than average or limited lifespans.

Crocodiles and Aging

Crocodiles do not have a fixed lifespan. In the wild, their average lifespan appears to be70-100years. That is, they do not frequently die from what we call 'old age'. Crocodiles more often die from other causes. That is, they are not eternal. Crocodiles and humans alike, as they age, lose muscle tension, teeth and female crocodiles produce fewer eggs. Zoo crocodiles eventually die, even if they are well cared for, but they have exhibited extremely long lifespans.

The Longest-Lived Crocodile

Freethy died in 2010 at the age of

140years, and is considered the longest-lived crocodile in captivity. This freshwater crocodile was captured by Steve and Bill Owen. He was captured multiple times. Freshwater crocodiles are docile, but due to fear and misunderstanding of their nature, they are still shot. The Current Longest Living Captive Crocodile

Henry, a 120-year-old male saltwater crocodile living in South Africa, is currently the oldest living captive crocodile. He lives with six female companions, and has produced more than 10,000 offspring in the past 30-35 years.

Other Long-Lived Animals

Crocodiles are not the only animals that can live for a century. Many of these animals are found in the water.

For example, the lifespan of a bowhead whale or beluga whale is approximately200years. The oldest bowhead whale died with a history of 211 years. These marine mammals are sometimes treated as historical artifacts: whales are found with 200-year-old ivory spears still embedded in their bodies. They are among the longest-lived marine mammals.

The Lifespan of Another Marine AnimalThe Greenland Shark. Using samples from at least 272 female sharks, scientists found that these animals lived for at least272

years. They are the longest-lived vertebrates.

Also, clams, worms and animals such as sponges and bacteria have very long lifespans

Animals that age negligibly

In 1833, the Turritopsis nutrilla, or 'immortal jellyfish', was discovered, which shocked scientists in the mid-1990s. They discovered that it is essentially immortal. They may die and are frequently eaten, but if they live to adulthood, they will use a process called transdifferentiation, which allows them to regenerate any part of their body into any other part. When it is sick or injured, it does so to repair itself and continue to survive. Although their genes are the same worldwide, they develop differently according to climate. In cooler places, they have 8 tentacles, and in warmer places, they have 24.

Some Animals Thought to Be Immortal

Some people believe that lobsters have a long lifespan, with male lobsters averaging 31 years and female lobsters averaging 54 years. Lobsters produce an enzyme that allows them to repair their shells. That is, they usually die due to exhaustion during molting (shedding their shells during growth), or they simply stop molting after growing up. This makes them more susceptible to injury and infection, which is a common cause of death in older lobsters.

Famous Long-Lived Animals

He lived to be 503 years old. Unfortunately, this old clam was killed by scientists who opened its body to calculate its age. In each year of its life, the clam's shell grows a ring, like a tree.

The Most Popular Old Animal

Jonathan, a 188-year-old turtle living on the South Pacific island of St Helena, spent his life well.
